Artist can choose 20 images from a list of thousands of types/categories. When artist picks a picture by name, then can flip through many wolves/dolphins/flowers, whatever till she gets her 20 pictures together. Then, she rates them, and then an algorithm is used to place them on a page, the page is printed out and artist receives a neat-o collage. It would be good if someone could package this and offer it as shareware on the web. I have the idea but no idea how to carry it out :) Hope that makes someone smile.

There is a great deal more to making a collage than merely placing standard images on a page. Each image must be considered as to size, emphasis, color relationship and the content in relationship to the content of the other images. Subtle patterns are created by the interplay of these and other factors which have a relationship to the psychology of the artist. Beyond this, there are secondary patterns created by color and form similarities across the entire composition. I doubt an algorithm could juggle these inter-relationships in a pleasing and meaningful manner.

Hi Sand,

Thanks for your comment. I forsee this for those who've got digital images on a harddrive and want to quickly put something together. Or, just as a fun, quick. here are the 20 things that make my life pop, and bang, you've got a collage. A collage maker for someone who wants something quickly. I love cutting things out of magazines, but imagine what we could do with the millions if not billions of digital images out there.

If you're serious and want real flexibility, and the capability to inject your sense of self into a graphic form, start playing with Photoshop or Illustrator and the infinite multitude of images available on the web. Otherwise you've just got the graphic equivalent of Leggo.

And Lego is not doing well? I see this as more multi-faceted than lego. ie, pick a picture from a name, it's a dolphin, now you can scroll through 2,000 dolphin images, pick one, pick 20, up to you. Then, the magic of computers (and yet, Photoshop does have some features like this), comes into play to use templates or a rating system to place the photos for you, press print and you've got a personalized picture of the 20 things that matter to you in life. Perhaps it's just another Photoshop filter/process, but I think collage-maker 1.0 is something new.

I am very curious about your rating system. Your enthusiasm for Leggo betrays a basic ignorance as to the artistic capabilities and motivations involved in creating a significant collage composition. To mechanically sort a mass of photos by algorithm aligned with the personal preferences of the individual requires a level of artificial intelligence not yet attained.

I'm going to let that stand and see what others think of the idea. And, you can reach me privately to discuss this if you like at albi @ earthlink.net
