Since the topic is going to be filling the airwaves and has significant implications for peoples financial planning why shouldn't the politicians have the same restrictions as those in the financial services industry?

As much as I hate to add government responsibility, why not REQUIRE a govenment body to certify presentation materials, speeches, websites, etc that ANY elected official uses to make a case regarding their idea or plan? That way we would have the actual management of the program own up to valid solutions to the dillema they already aknowledge:

Social Security Trustees release their 2004 ReportOn March 23rd the Social Security Board of Trustees released their 2004 report at a press conference. The report shows little change in Social Security’s projected financial status and points out that, absent changes, currently scheduled Social Security benefits are not sustainable. The report is available in both text and portable document format. Frankly, the trustees of the system should have full accountability to report the viability of the system... not a politician!

In addition, since I've reviewed the Social Security Online website that might be an excellent place to put an opinion poll for capturing votes on which plan (or plan elements) to incorporate. A security feature might be added to only collect votes from VALID social security id's.

The media would also be instructed to use ONLY data from a social security trustee data source. That way, we can review and resolve whether or not we have solid facts backing up recommendations.
