Universal powercube | |||||||||||||||||
I get tired of all the different voltages and currents, and not to mention plug configurations on powercubes. Since now that it's so inexpensive to produce regulated high current power in such a small lightweight package, why not make all devices use one voltage, say 12V, and make one plug, one polarity, and so cut the need to buy yet another cube when we have a box full of them in the garage. Here's why it can work. We have one plug, one voltage, one universal polarity, for everything we plug into our homes. The manufacturer has the responsibility to make his product work on 110VAC, 60Hz. Look at how many different kinds of things work on the same power... the same could be done at the low voltage DC world.

As a resident of Europe, it would be nice if some accomodation for 220V 50Hz were made. It would also make travel easier.
Sand, much of the transformerless lightweight high current power cubes do take 230V 60~ input as well as 110. A lot of laptop supplies are that way. To add to my post, Think of it, if there were just one standard, prices on electronics would drop, because they wouldn't have to sell power cubes with their gadgets. One or two companies could manufacture the same cube, and the price would be rock bottom... even be sold at the dollar stores. I'd love to buy a modem or wireless router without a power cube and pay $20 less for it.

It wouldn't work for technical and pracitcal reasons.
yes, but every company wants to make up some of the r&d money by making a margin on each power supply.
