Child proof drawer pulls | |||||||||||||||||
I suppose I should be proud my just-turned-3 year old figured out how to open cabinets that have child proof locks on them, but I'm more concerned for her safety. I'm proposing a new type of child proof safety device. We recently re-finished a chest of drawers, and put new hardware on the drawers ("pulls"). We shopped for new pulls, but couldn't find any that have locking mechanisms. Why not an aftermarket product where the drawer pull itself creates the internal locking mechanism? A simple key could open it, but a child's prying fingers wouldn't. I figure it would take my three year old at least a month to figure out that one! There could be an emergency unlock process, similar to bedroom doors at home (the center pinhole that can be opened with a paper clip).

I may have seen them. You have a keyed magnetic device which undoes a latch. You hang the "key" out of reach, or carry it with you.
You could also have a drawer pull that has to be pulled out and then turned in order for it to work (similar to the locking mechanism on the case for food processor blades). A dual-step process would probably thwart a toddler and it wouldn't require a key that perhaps a babysitter or someone else in an emergency would not be able to find. - Mariette Wharton
