Almost every product is packed in a carton (e.g. 12 per carton) then arrives in the store and the carton is discarded which is a tremendous waste of trees and then probably gets burned which adds to the global warming problem. Whynot have a variety of sizes of plastic boxes which can be reused almost indefinately. Every city would have a storage place/bank for these boxes where manufacturers could withdraw and stores could deposit. You would pay a cash deposit when withdrawing and get it back when depositing.

In order for it to be practical to transport the empties, the boxes could be designed that when turned around back to front the bottom of one is at the level of the top of the next and when stacked all the same way the bottom of one is directly above the bottom of the next (this trick is in common use).
