My local vending machine just told me for the 100th time that my dollar bill could not be used to purchase an 85-cent product because it needed correct change. A 90-cent product, sure; the problem appears to be a shortage of nickels. Why not add an override key, so that I can choose to pay 90 cents (or a dollar) for my preferred product? Socially conscious vending entrepreneurs could even add an option allowing a donation of the difference to a national charity.

As somewhat of a vending machine aficionado myself, I don't really think this idea would work. Coke machines and pepsi machines, are actually run like small computers, and if more money were to be inserted in the machine than drinks were dispensed it could cause a problem. Another thing to take into consideration is the theft threat from a override button, the more control you give to someone outside of the veding machines steel door, the more control they ultimately have inside, with a bit of skill. To demonstrate this. Go to any coke machine, and press the vend buttons in this order: 4-2-3-1. THe debug menu is opened for technicians, and in some cases, if certain dip switches are left on inside the machine, you can get it to release free soda.
