I am overwhelmed by the product packaging these days. The color, the fancy packaging material, the layers of packaging boxes and papers. For me, well-established product, even without these excessive package, I am still going to buy it. So why don’t give the consumer the choice and added benefit of an environment friendly product and give the manufacture the choice of cost cutting.
I hope my idea can be picked up by a popular household name of consumer product. This company should start a environment friendly design of its package – use recycled, least possible package material and least possible print of fancy pictures. Make it dark green, blue and white with a clear logo of earth somewhere so that I can locate right away on the shelf.
This doesn’t have to be regulated by government or agencies at the beginning. Let each individual company define their own version of the environmental friendly packaging. A few years down the road, consumers and companies should work together to benchmark and standardize. The important point is to get the message out and start the process.

I agree with you. Herea solution: In Zurich (Switzerland) the local authorities decided to reduce household trash. People have to buy garbage bags from the town at the cost of 5 Swiss Francs (approx $ 4.20 a bag. The result is positive. The city's trash came down by over 40 %. The supermarkets installed a space, after the cash registers, where consumers can unpack the goods they bought (cartons, foils plastic, wrapings etc. Thus, the volume consumers take home is much reduced and the trash remains at the supermarket (which has to dispose of it and bear the cost). This will force the supermarkets to think twice about packaging the goods they sell!Just to mention: The Zurich consumers also have to separate their trash: Metal, Plastic,Paper, Organic Matters. It is quite complicated and families need some space at home, where to keep all those bags. But, I think it is a good way out of the huge problems of our cities and their evergrowing trash mountains.

I am alarmed by the amount of packaging used in the USA and also most of it is used unnecessarily.
Food carry out is a prime example where organic packing could help. (those Styrofoam/ Plastic-paper composite Take home boxes and the plastic bags to carry out can be and should be reduced).
One good suggestion is to use boxes/ trays made with hard molded banana leaves. (In India these are used as plates in the food stalls/ street food vendors) These hard banana leaf heat pressed boxes / plates are easy to make, very cheap as they reuse unwanted waste leaves and banana stalks and also are 100% natural. their water-resistance is as good as the Styrofoam-thermocole boxes and have good shelf life.
Health/hygeine concerns over handling can be tackled by agencies who monitor samples and check production sites for human contact to the boxes.
