I thought of this before VideoPlus, and offered it to them when theirs came out but they ignored me. It's a bit late now with TiVos etc but I'd still find it handy ...
Ever get reminded of something you should have set the video for when you're already out?Why not have the recorder linked to the answerphone so you can phone home from any touch-tone phone, enter a pin number and then program the video with a simple code that you can guess?
Eg. If I want to record the local news, I don't need a secret code in a newspaper to know it's on channel 3 from six for half an hour so I just enter 0318001830. Most PVRs need to be connected to the phone anyway now so it wouldn't add any cost. You could use the same code from an SMS text message now.

Some VCR (I think Panasonic) was developed, or limited released, that did that.

Personally, I'd think an external box that sits in front of or on top of a VCR, which controls it from the phone.

Well, the VCR was never a useful invention to start with... so why bother.
