Lost luggage at the airport | |||||||||||||||||
The amount of luggage the airlines loses are staggering. God forbid it happens to me, I hope they implement some technology to rid of this problem. I have two possible solutions. Solution 1. Put "Smart Tags" on luggage so that it may act like a GPS device. If your luggage does not arrive you can simply go to the lost and found office and they can check the whereabouts of your luggage.. Kind of like a temporary, lojack for your suitcase. Perhaps it may be a service the airlines automatically do for the customers, OR for a usage fee for individuals. I believe some people, especially those traveling on business would pay a little extra so they do not lose important items like documents. Solution 2. Instead of waiting for a customer to find out their luggage is missing, you fix the problem before they ever know about it. In statistics we learn about internal and external failure costs. The internal failure costs are almost always smaller than the external failure costs because catching a mistake before the customer does allows you to retain that customer for future business. Therefore, using the GPS example, I thought it may be a good idea to to split all luggage into 1-3 groups. While individual luggage has the GPS "smart tags", the minute an individual bag seperates from the group, it automatically sends a signal, or email to the controller who may at that time find out where the problem occured, so you can find and fix the problem without the customer ever knowing there was a problem in the first place. If you have ever seen "SwordFish" the movie, it is like those dog collars they attached on the hostages where if one of the hostages ran away, after leaving the group, a signal would go off, and blow up that individual. Though this is quite graphic, the concept can be useful (in a nonviolent matter). Added costs could be made up by advertising a very low % of luggage lost, would attract more customers, more revenue. and no angry customer. [T]
