Why not build modern mobile phone technology into the car radio? With UMTS or similar, the mobile internet bandwith is enough for audio streams. Lets forget AM radio and use internet streams for car radio! 10000 channels at your service! There is always a station with the music you like, and if not, just build one at home! If companies offer a flatrate for 10, 20 $ (or EUR) there should be enough customers to make money from it.

Uhm, skip a few steps, and you have digital radio.The US has two satellite based services with good variety for about that price, and much of Africa and the middle east has WorldSpace, pls there should be something like that in Europe by now.
As for internet on phones, AFAIK, it is expensive.
