I think publicly sharing ideas is great and if you want to completely give your idea away that's great too. But it would be nice if this site also provided a way for a group of like-minded people who have refined an idea to go ahead with the patenting process. I'm not sure how easy it is for one person to patent an idea (cost, legalese, etc.) but if resources on this site could be created and if the resources of a group of users could be combined, then we could provide more incentive for people to share ideas freely and openly.
Defining the "group of like-minded people" could be left to WhyNot to avoid any arguments. They could look at comments and decide who provided truly creative input to the original post.

I agree and feel like this is a good idea. Even if it is a links page that has the appropriate links in order for navigating the patent process. I am currently managing about 400 different ideas. Many I want to pursue privately for monetary gain, but I get a lot of ideas regarding safety, information that I may never produce but want to see out in the public domain, hopefully for others to act on. I have a Train Safety, 18-Wheeler and a Pregnancy Prevention concept on my website that I want people to act on. While we may not share our million dollar idea here, certainly we can share those we will never pursue or those for the common good. And I am very grateful for this site and the concept as it provides many with a great outlet.

Sounds nice - just tell me your patentable idea and I'll see what I can do.
Why hesitate? You can trust me.
I'd never rip you off, patent the invention in my own name and legally block you from using the results of your own creativity. That would be dishonest. I'd never do that, not even if it would give me a lucrative monopoly on a must-have product. No sirree, not me. The thought would never cross my mind. Trust me.
A truly feel inticed by your trusting nature!
Wrong button! But I agree with the idea in principle, if you refer to "why not protection", the wicki nature of why not, tied in with free database download to members would avoid the blatent problem outlined by nihil...
