Currently, vehicle navigation systems involve looking at a tiny map, and following a little triangle on a screen. Rather than this, look out your windshield and drive normally. A green line or arrow is superimposed onto the road or highway showing you where to go. It's as if a stripe has been painted on the road leading you to your destination. How is this done? GPS, mapping software, eye-tracking (or simpler, a start-of-trip calibration)... The same technology could be used to display virtual signs above the road or virtual speed markers on the side of the road.

Actually, it is as simple as an oblique H.U.D. projection of a pared down version of what is on the screen of the normal GPS guidance unit.
