Just about any coffee drinker cares whether she is getting caffeinated or decaf and yet there is no way to know. A chemist should invent a Decaf Tester. The ideal medium would be a toothpick that would turn dark in the presence of non-decaf coffee. A toothpick is ideal because it is small enough to be easily carried and yet long enough to hold one end and dip the other in. The toothpick is also superior to a type of litmus paper which would look unpleasing after it got wet and be difficult to dispose of. A toothpick is unobtrusive and could be packaged in wrappers. The toothpick is biodegradable and would be easy to dispose of after each testing use.

The problem with a reagent caffeine test is that it would be toxic, uncertian or both. Usually we use a HPLC separation to measure caffeine content.
And completely caffeine free brands have been developed, none has been successful, they taste more charcoal than coffee. Most decaf brands have about 1/10 the caffeine content of real coffee.
