As many of you know, the cost of medical malpractice insurance for many doctors, namely OB/GYNs, has either forced doctors to stop delivering babies or post a guarantee with the state and practice without insurance.
Why not pass the cost of insurance onto the patient in the form of optional coverages. The patient advantage is a liability limit greater than the $250,000 posted with the state. The doctors advantage is the protection that insurance provides.
It actually benefits the insurance companies because of a positive 'adverse selection'. The patients who would be able to afford this insurance probably have a lower incidence of birth related issues which might cause physician liability.

There are thousands who are sleep deprived, and kill people becuase of this sleep deprivation. Why not reward doctors (or hospitals)who can responsible sleep habits (just like other insurance incentives) with lower premiums.
