Why should we have to pay taxes for something we don't believe in? If I don't believe in the military, why should 20 cents of each of my hard-earned dollars be spent on it? If I don't believe in farm subsidy, why should my tax dollars go toward that?

We should be able to declare what governmental agency or agencies receive our tax monies each year. That way, if you don't believe in abortion, you shouldn't have to pay for one. That way, if you don't believe in the war on drugs, you shouldn't give your money to the FDA.

Certain infrastructural programs would be slated to recieve a certain amount, but special interests would have to appeal to US--the Tax Payers.

Programs that were not valuable to the majority would lose their power and eventually die off. Programs that were succesful would gain in public funding.

If we all own our piece of America, it makes us prouder to be Americans. If I give a dollar to someone else, I lose the power of that dollar; however, if I spend my dollar toward something important to me, it is a dollar well spent.

This is a good idea for some government programs but not for others. Opting out of the military is an example where this idea *wouldn't* work. How can you not pay for and opt out of military protection? If we were to get attacked by another country, would we tell the attackers to go to your house and the others that haven't paid?

But for other programs like abortion ("family planning"?), this is a great idea. Or you could opt out of paying social security taxes in exchange for agreeing never to collect social security benefits. I would take that deal in a heartbeat.

I had a similar idea: add a surcharge for those who insist on directing their taxes towards certain government programs.
