Shoes for Dogs | |||||||||||||||||
As a cat owner, I wonder how dog owners cope with the tracking of mud in the house? This seems to be a great cost of dog ownership. Dogs love walking, and based on evidence in my suburban neighborhood, they walk through a lot of mud. Stepping on glass and rough pavement may also be a risk factor for dogs. Why not introduce "high tech" shoes engineered for dogs? Yes, this would be an engineering challenge (must be comfortable, easy to put on and stay on, and sizing would be a challenge), but seems like it could be done. — Cassiopaea, Dec 28 2004 Here in Helsinki I have seen shoes for dogs as well as raincoats and coats with hoods. Although the weather here is comparable to that of New York City although it dips a bit colder in winter on occasion. Although most humans remove their shoes on entering private quarters, it might be difficult to train dogs to respond in like manner. — sand, Dec 29 2004 We keep a towel at the back door and, depending on the muddiness, we just have them walk across it or we stop them and wipe their feet. It turns out, though, that there are quite a few sources for dog shoes. Try a google search. — kmohnkern, Mar 07 2005 With apologies, I had to repost this idea. The original posting had 3 in favor.

My friend owns a bird dog. Although I have never went hunting with him, he did show me his dog shoes. They were designed to keep dogs from getting stickers and thorns in their feet when they go to retrieve a bird. It was sort of interesting. The shoes looked like little leather pouches with a draw string at the top.
Dog shoes are not an original idea as much as most people think. There is a website that sells probably three or four different types.
The Vancouver (Canada) Police Department introduced them for their dogs quite a while ago.
