We all know that fuel adds to environmental pollution and that it is limited & expensive. Why not include the weight of luggage as part of the airline price, which would encourage passengers to be more economical with the amount of luggage they bring with them (so that there would be a lesser burden on the plane, which would mean burning less fuel)? Now Steve Evans of idea-a-day.com suggested the addition of the passengers' weights into the price, but I think that this would be unfair for the heavier folks.

I agree that ticket price would partially be based upon the weight of the person and baggage. There are other costs associated with dealing with each individual that is the same for each passenger. But to save costs and boost profit I'm sure airlines regulate a per person ticket to make more money by concealing certain profit making enterprises. I'm sure more obese people eat more at airports than people of lithe profile. So obese people help promote the leasing of airport property for restaurants. To take into account all the benefits and burdens to deduce a fair cost ticket would be at best, difficult.
There would also be more weight capacity for passengers available per flight. Though I don't know if people would actually carry less even if they had to pay for it. This might just increase the cost of travel for everyone because of the added complexity.

Airlines calculate an average luggage weight into ticket prices. If you have an excessive amount of baggage, they may charge extra (my ex-wife's idiot cousin once insisted on carrying a set of alloy car rims with him on a domestic flight, the airline charged him for an extra seat).

I think, that the luggage should not be a part of ticket at all. It should say - a seat price + luggage. The charges again are in ascending order. Lesser the luggage, lower the charges. More luggage more charges. The maximum limit is for example, 45 kgs per passanger.

Peoplr who are travelling lighter will pay less than those who travell heavier.

As far as the price variations based on the weight of the passanger is concerned, its a trickly mined field which I suggest should not trampled upon in the first place.

I think the weight of the passenger and luggage should be added together to calculated the price. We've been thinking a lot about this while queuing with our luggage, afraid to have too much weight.However. I don't thing it would ever happen. It would be impossible to buy tickets online, or to arrange early bookings, unless privacy policy changes. But it would be a fair arrangement.
