Dept. of Defense->PEACE | |||||||||||||||||
Though controversial, many Americans believe the war in Iraq is unjustified. Like Chas Bayfield of idea-a-day.com, I think that by changing the name Department of Defense to Department of Peace, there would be an attitude change, at least temporarily. You have to admit that this way, there would be a stronger impulsion amongst politicians to value life more greatly in the short-term if not in the long-term.

People who are dead are very peaceful. I hesitate to encourage an organization devoted to creating dead people.
It sounds like Newspeak to me (see the novel 1984). In other words, it sounds like a way of making something bad sound like it is something good. War is not peace.
I think "Department of Defense" is a bad enough euphemism as it is. Americans already offer the department their blind support because they believe it is there to defend them. I've seen the exact opposite in the past few years. Let's name it for what it's worth... the Department of Offense.
Dept. of Peace - bet Mexico would march right in and take our government out from under us!
actually - they are already doing that!
The kind of people I used to know that thought THAT SAME WAY were in the cattle pastures eating funny little mushrooms!

Unfortunately "Department of Defense" (or "Ministry of defence" in the case of the UK) is already a euphemism. In the 1900's it was called the "Ministry of war", but the name was changed to make it sound less offensive (pun intended).
This euphemism is past its sell-by date. No matter what you call it, it's their deeds that you must judge them by.

Well, the motto of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) is "Peace Is Our Profession." Unfortunately, they have succeeded in preventing only nuclear war, not conventional.
