For some reason, I have a hard time keeping track of the due dates for books that my family has checked-out from our local library! I think this system would be a great help to me....and maybe it already exists in some libraries (just not mine)!!
WHY NOTE design library software that will use library cards with magnetic strips to check out books. The cards would allow the librarian to maintain a perpetual inventory and track borrowed books.
The system could then place an automated reminder call, to remind the user that their book is due (in say 48hrs or 72 hrs). This would be similar to those automated message systems that call and remind patients of their MD or dental appointments.
The system could also be set up to send an email reminder of a book's due date.

Here in Finland library cards with magnetic strips are in universal use. There is, however, no electronic due date notification but it would be interesting to set up a blinking LED or a sound alert on a cell phone or house phone to alert consumers to a whole range of due dates with automatic messages for not only library books but utility bills and legal notifications and perhaps even medical and security emergencies.
Another addition that would be very welcome as a warning would be a modification of automobile theft alarms that warn the owners by cell phone instead of screaming out in the middle of the night to wake up entire neighborhoods.
