Why not attach small portable scanning beds to the outside of notebooks? The lid could "snap" shut when not being used and make the outisde of the laptop look like a normal computer, but could come off to reveal a small scanning bed for light scan/fax/copy jobs when necessary. This might make the laptop a little thicker but care could be taken to minimize the needed depth.
