Why should we pay a known price for watermelon with unknown quality? It is claimed that by tapping the melon with one hand, and judging from the vibration felt at the other end of the melon, together with the sound the tapping makes, good melons can be easily identified. But this trial-and-error method proved to have mixed results due to individual’s judgment. But based on this same idea, together with current technology in ultrasound used in OB/GYN and parking-distance-detectors used in automobile, it should be feasible to design an electronic gadget that sends an ultrasonic wave through one probe, receive through the other probe, and then compare this sound profile against a pre-established empirical database of melons of varying quality. The quality of the melons can then be non-destructively identified.
