I'd love to see a fast food chain that has all the characteristics of known fast food chains (with drive-thru and everything), except mine would serve only vegetarian food (hot meals, sandwhiches and healthy snacks). The food must be made of high quality (organic) ingredients and well pre-tested to ensure people really like it, and come in a sufficient variety so that part-time vegetarians like me are also attracted (make no mistake, I do like a good steak from time to time :)

Why do I think this would be a big success?
- Firstly, the only chain I know that comes even a bit close is Subway, but firstly it's only sandwiches they serve, and second it still takes too long to get your food there.
- Then, the time is right. People are getting more and more aware of and upset with the way animals are being held and processed to end up in burgers.
- Also, I think marketing and PR would take off and fly no problem as people realize they can enjoy their meals without any bad conscience as is the case with ordinary fast food, which alwyas has that ugly "dark side" to it no-one really wants to think about.

Ever since I started watching my cholesterol, I have wanted something just like this. I've had about all the Subway I can take, and I can't find any other establishment that provides healthy meals quick and cheap. I am less interested in the meat industry aspect; I am still carnivorous. I am interested in the impact of the food on my health.

There is a fast food chain called Cafe de Coral in some cities in China. The food is wonton soups, rice noodle, shop suey vegetables, dim sum type stuf, etc, really fresh. The concept needs only to westernise a bit to reach the mainstream in the US.

They are very popular over there (some are as crowded as the macdonalds next door!!), and I think starting to arrive in California, from an article in The economist 6 months ago.

Well put. I would have suggested this myself, but I suspected that it is being done already. I didn't think china though. The east coast area could stand to benefit from something like that for sure.

That is a great idea. I've been veggie for years and would love it if I could get good fast food instead of the dog-eared mush burger that passes for vegetarian in MacDonalds. Sadly, I doubt the market would support it.

Using high quality, especially organic (which is often lower quality), ingredients will make this restraunt expensive. There are a few places where people would be willing to shell out the cash, but to make a fast food place successful you need a bunch of stores nearby so one food truck can make a bunch of deliveries. It might just work in So California but i bet they already have something similar.

This might do well in college towns, women's and liberal colleges especially.

Otherwise I don't know.

This ties in with the commercialization of Indian food. In the UK there are plenty of Indian Curry shops, but I see very few fast food Indian outlets in the big American cities.<p>A simple menu of mostly vegetarian offerings with zippy names could be very popular, I think. Peopelliek spicy, and are burned out on Thai and Mexican.

I know it's not really a fast-food place, but my wife and I found "Wild Oats" on a trip out west. I have heard there are some in the east where I live, but I haven't found them. They are a (super!) market for vegetarian (and non-vegetarian), holistic, types like myself and have a deli section with lots of choices for all tastes. In the one we went to in Utah, you can buy a fabulous meal for a modest price and go upstairs to the lounge area to eat it. We ate many of our meals there - no, we don't need to get out more - because the food was SO good.

As a bachelor, I've been searching for this for years.

There's a chain of Indian fast food restaurants that started in Singapore (and is now expanding a fair bit to other countries as well). Link: www.komalasweb.com

There's any number of fast-food restaurants all over India that serve "100% vegetarian" [which means no eggs or fish either] snacks - idli, vada, dosa, uttapam, etc. as well as full means - known as "tiffin" or "thali" variously. Highly recommended!

I think i may actually have to wait until I die and go to heaven for this to happen, but its worth hoping for!

For now, I'm stuck building my own "Veggie Mac" using the Big Mac recipe I found online, with a couple Boca Burgers thrown in.
