heating on/off | |||||||||||||||||
It would be great to have your thermostat connected to your Internet-(cable/dsl)-connected-computer. When you forget to turn off your heating when you leave home, you can simply turn it off by using an internet connection from your office... Or turn it on when you leave the office for home...

this is already possible. i know someone who does this in the uk for their house abroad.
As well, there are thermostats with infrared, which can tell if someone is home, and so turn the heat on if necessary. I was marketing this in 1995. Home networks allow you to control devices over the internet, but at present they are not cheap. Bottom line - you're right. This is a great idea.
we have a highly programmable thermostat/controller unit that obviates the need for complexity suggested here, not that i am against it, simply that the kiss principle is probably more effective/efficient in the long run...
