One day, I was eating at McDonald's here in the Philippines. It so happened that the place was packed with people having breakfast as well. A lot of people, including myself, are in search of a table. Luckily, I found one, but there were so many burger wrappers, empty plastic cups and cartons of French fries. We don't follow the "clean as you go" principle so I searched the place for a service crew to clean up the mess. I had to wait for 10 minutes before the table got cleared. Why not create tables with an auto-clean button? With just one push of that button, all the clutter would just be swept right in front of you. On either side of the table, there are trash bins. So the service crew can just collect the trash everytime he/she makes rounds.

Yes, I agree with your first statement of implementing the " clean as you go" principle..this is not very easy thou that is why a technological invention such as what you suggest may also be helpful to solve that problem..problem of people who are too lazy to clean up their own mess. What I'm worried about is that this Auto Clean table will make people lazier and lazier by the minute. This idea is very good by itself and it will be also a great help for restaurants like McDo whose waiters have little time to clean up the mess on the tables.
Although the concept is good, it requires a heavy investment by the restaurant in new equipment as opposed to depending upon the responsibility of the consumer in cleaning up. Putting a trash bin at each table takes up precious space and actually discourages consumers from acting responsibly by carrying their trash to a few central locations. So it is unlikely to come about. The world is always plagued by irresponsible slobs but hopefully they will remain in the minority.
