I have a stereo unit that I've used for 10 years or so. Its CD play function has stopped working; the CD skips and sometimes won't play at all. All the other functions work, though. I think if I had a replacement motor and knew how to install it, I could get a few more years of life out of it.

Therefore, why not a website with instructions on servicing home appliances, links to places selling replacement parts like little motors...There would have to be some fairly obvious warnings like "Servicing your appliances WILL void your warranty AND can be dangerous", but it's possible.

The best solution would be a multiple function unit which had simple plug in modules which could be purhased separately so that if any function went bad that module could be replaced by simply unplugging the bad part and plugging in a new one.

Yes, the devices would have to be built with easily replaceable subassemblies. That, of course, takes more engineering and is likely less profitable.

If central unit were designed to which updated modules could be added, it might be a viable commercial unit.

Much f that info the manufacturers consider proprietary, so will release only to authorised personnel. There are some service documents available, if you look.

For parts, the manufacturers want you to buy their own parts, and only if you are an authorised service tech. Other places will only sell if they set you up with an accont, which you can only do if you are a service shop. They don't want to sell onsies tto individuals.

Good idea but there is no one who knows every thing,I mean i can put in the web site but i don't know any thing about the service, i am even sure that no one knows every thing? we need a team who can post the service instructions with step by step procedure including the few clips.

If any one is really interested in bringing up the ideas to live i am even interested in teaming up.

It is better in bringing the ideas to live instead of just building a huge of piles of data but nothing unless put in to life.
