Sensor on the back of a car that would measure distance of car behind another car relative to speed of travel, then transmit the licence plate # of a tailgater to a monitoring system at the level of Dept. of Motor Vehicles or highway law enforcement agency. Obviously, settings would be adjusted so that a car 10 feet behind at 3 mph would not be reported, but a car 15 feet behind at 75 mph would be. Data could be reported to insurance companies, and tailgating drivers could receive warnings, then a citation after repeat violations.

Something more immediate than a warning might discourage tailgaters. Perhaps flashing sign to move away plus a bright headlight facing rearward to shine in the offending driver's eyes. There is the distinct possibility that the bright light could cause an accident so perhaps that is not a good idea.

Blimey, if you are going to go down the road of dazzling or blinding people why not have a button on the dash which will release a cloud of Halon or Co2 to suffocate the engine of the numpty who is driving too close behind you? or when you hit the button some tetrahedron spikes get dropped into its path and take out the tyres. Is there a chemical which if it gets into an air intake will clog it and stop the engine? or react with the fuel in the cylinders to render it uncombustable? Think 'Top Gun' when one aircraft flies into the 'jet wash' of another and the gases put the flame in the turbine out......

A bright light that goes out when a decent following distance is acquired is hardly equivalent to military action. I am not particularly happy with the idea, but it might prove immediately effective with someone threatening your life with a close tailgate. Driving can easily prove to be a life threatening situation with an idiot on your tail and calls for immediate response. Notifying legal forces may be a long run remedy but is no help for an immediate threat.

I have found that immediate relief from tailgaters can be achieved by slowing until the tailgater passes you. This probably goes against the grain with most drivers. I sometimes get the feeling that nearly everyone watches NASCAR on Sunday and goes through the week thinking that they have to be in front to win. . .

I slow down to the point that the tailgator feels ridiculous and stupid. Reporting to police won't work as it would tie up law enforcement with millions of complaints. Complain to their insurance agencies. My suggestions:1. All cars should be equipmmed with a front end sensor that detects tailgating above certain speeds and registers in a "black box." At the time of licence/insurance renewal, the person gets a premium shock.

You can not tell who is driving a car, like a prospective buyer. Why should you be repremanded for someone elses driving.

But I can see an automated tool that detects and correlates your speed and closing speed to automatically flash the brake lights in short intervals to warn them of a potential collision. They might be on the verge of sleeping or under the influence.
