Google Local has a great interface for directions. I'm looking forward to being able to save locations after searching (for future reference). Additionally, I would like to see an option at each step of the directions with a drop-down list of all the exits on that road for the duration of that step. One should be able to change part of the direction path to include a stop along the way, maybe you have to pick someone up, or maybe you want to take/ avoid a certain road/highway. Once you select an exit on a segment, the page would refresh recreating the directions to include this edited path. Another great use will be for calculating distances of paths (when the path is not the path which google's algorithm chooses). I have seen a similar drop-down menu implemented in traffic.com's site for plotting an exact communte to give traffic congestion data and I would think that it could be easily applied to Google Local (Maps).

Great idea. I'd be nice to also have a drop down-menu that lets you sort possible routes by distance, max/min average speed limits, traffic density, tolls, etc.
YES! I've been waiting for this idea on Google Maps/Mapquest ever since it came out. Another way of doing it would be to be able to add "waypoints" that your route has to travel through. IE, go from A to C, but pass through B. You could stick the waypoint wherever you wanted. Either at your friend's house who you have to pick up, or at the exit you want to take or whatever.
Excellent Idea. Since Google Earth has gas stations and restaurants listed, maybe the interface would allow you to plan for reservations at hotels and restaurants and indicate the fuel used for your trip to that point by entering your anticipated vehicle mpg.
They now allow you to add a destination, however it would be nice to specify different paths.
Huzzah! Google finally began doing this a couple of months ago. Now you can click and drag the route to deviate from the default.
