Timeouts in Basketball | |||||||||||||||||
The most frustrating thing about watching a basketball game is the timeouts. Teams shouldn't be able to call a time out in the final 2 minutes of each half. This would make the game much more interesting and make it move along faster. They can still have stoppages for fouls, but a team cannot call a time out in the final 2 minutes.

Excellent idea. I don't watch basketball a lot, but the timeouts in some other sports really bug me. The problem is that most pro sports leagues today favor broadcasters over in-person fans, and the TV networks need breaks to make room for commercials. IMO TV has spoiled most pro sports for attendees. I attended a major league baseball game a year ago and got bored stiff, in large part because of the breaks. I attended one 30 years ago and the breaks were much shorter. In pro soccer, they do it right, that is, there are no breaks within periods unless someone gets hurt or the like. But the TV networks don't like it, so you rarely see pro soccer on broadcast TV. Some cable channels can carry it because they can afford to have a lower commercial "load".
I think everyone has the frustration with timeouts, but most of the frustration comes from the TV timeouts. It is very clear to see who runs the game. I have played and coached and the last two minutes are crucial to a win or loss. Games do go on way too long. Baseball is trying to address this, but until we get a single sponsor for the whole game no media will take it. We need to find a "TIVO" like response to this.
