Car speed recorder | |||||||||||||||||
Have you ever been stopped for speeding, and felt that the officer simply made up a number that couldn't possible have been true? In our state, police do not even need to use a radar gun -- they can simply estimate your speed. This usually becomes a case of his (or her) word against yours, so we all pay the ticket and move on. My idea is for a device in cars that records your speed with a time and date stamp, perhaps combined with GPS technology, that could be used a proof that you were not in fact speeding, and the cop is simply wrong. What do you think?

There is no revenge like that of a cop whose hubris has been pricked. He will probably send you to prison for twenty years for sneezing in his face and whack you a dozen times for good measure.
I like this idea. The biggest problem I see with this is being able to use the data collected in court. It would be a great option on new cars or with lojack. It couldn't be the driver that downloads the info from his or her car. It would have to be a independent company that extracted the data to send to the court. The bad part would be I'm always speeding so even if this technology does come to fruition it would be just another nail in my casket.
For any good such a device could do it would probably lead to more trouble. Most likely the police would subpoena said records after any accident.
If you had been driving in a way that was considered erratic (Jackrabbit starts, driving too fast, then slow, switching lanes frequently, then too fast...etc.) a lawyer would be trying to hang at least partial responsibility on you on those grounds even if you weren't speeding or driving erratic at the time of the accident.
Yeah, I may be paranoid. But just because you know you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. . .
I agree, and this will probably come.
In the EU they already have this for all commercial vehicles. Its called a "Tachograph" and is a legal requirement. It is a sealed tamper-proof unit. It is primarily used to regulate working hours - compulsary breaks to stop drivers falling asleep at the wheel - but it can also be used for checking speeds. If the police stop a bus or lorry, and the driver has been driving for too many hours, or has been driving over the speed limit, bye-bye licence.
But, as the technology becomes cheaper its bound to come on private vehicles.
P.S. How can you be convicted of speeding when there is no evidence?
They exist. They are just a logging chip that connects to the diagnsotic port of your car.
The police can pretty much do whatever they want to when it comes to this stuff. If it comes down to your word against theirs, you are screwed. It doesn't matter if they can't prove it. Even if they clock it, do they have a sheet of paper that gets printed out saying this car went this speed at this location at this time?
GSM-AUTO who make the the GSM-AUTO REMOTE CONTROL PREHEATING SYSTEM are working on the concept of the AUTO-SPEED DETECTOR and it will monitor all the activity, just like a recorder in a truck. The AUTO-SPEED DETECTOR information can be down loaded and confirmed as in real time via GPRS or the GSM-AUTO DETECTOR can be set to monitor or govern the speed the vehicle can travel.GSM-AUTO say the GSM-SPEED DETECTOR will be ready for the market in a couple of months.Good one ey??
I'm against this on privacy grounds. I usually Am speeding, so pretty soon they'd devise a requirement to review your tape every month, then your insurance company would have it, etc.
I've been pulled over plenty of times, but never did I believe the officer had an incorrect reading. But I agree that an 'estimate' of your speed is a bad idea and I'm surprised that it could hold up in court.
Speeding really isn't a factor in a high percentage of accidents--it's just an easy revenue generator. This Orwellian black-box you're proposing will make it easier to generate revenue.
Good and dandy if you are not speeding but if you were oh well...
One more comment...Why don't we just use common sense. To avoid accidents and tickets, SLOW DOWN.
I am 44 years old and I haven't had a ticket since I was 19 years old.Reason, I obey the law.
Now I've been stopped for other reasons such as driving while being Hispanic in a Hick Town.
