Seat Belt Mandatory | |||||||||||||||||
First of all friends, I want to tell you that I read a few of your suggestions, and I must admit there are a lot of genious minds out there. I also appreciate your good will in sharing such thoughts. MAY GOD BLESS YOU.The thought I have is to design a safety feature, which will not allow the driver to start the car, unless the SEAT BELT is secured. Not just for the driver, but for all passengers. We can have sensors (weight,motion and heat), to identify how many passengers are sitting and so on, and make sure all passengers have put their seat belts. Any suggestions and feedback are most welcome. Tony

My car already has a system installed that beeps when someone does not have the seat belt on. That aside, I would not want to have a system that requires seat belts on to start the car. It's cold here about 5 months out of the year and I move my car out of the garage and let it warm up a few minutes while I attend to other things.
I bet the mechanic that works on my car, the person who changes the oil, and the valet at the restaurant would not like a feature like that either. When you are only moving the vehicle a short distance, like from indoors to outdoors, such a system would be a real drag.
Hi HyenufNoted your feedback.You are right, seat belts are not required to start a car. The parameters I have suggested should be applied when the car has to move. Probably automatic brakes, until the seat belt is put on, is a good idea. Having such a featured installed is for the safety of the passengers,and we have to follow certain safety procedures even though it is painful or inconvenient.
THEROLD,
You don't seen to get it. I don't want to put a seat belt on to move the car a short distance like out of the garage or from the street to the driveway. And I'm pretty certain mechanics and other service people don't want to either.
Newer cars have beepers that sound periodically if a seat belt isn't latched to alert the driver. Maybe a nice thing to have if you are transporting children. If such a device beeped all the time under such conditions people like me would be rewiring the car in short order; just like we did in the 70's when these seat belt interlock systems first came out; and the device would be rendered totally useless.
Hi HyenufA little respect wont hurt! I understand your point of reasoning. I hope you will someday understand mine. So, if you dont agree, leave it, dont fight with that thought. Tony
I wear a seat belt every time I drive or ride in a car, but I believe strongly that wearing a belt is a personal choice. Legally, every US state (except New Hampshire) has some kind of mandatory seat belt law for adults. If a person still chooses to drive without a seat belt, they accept the safety and legal risks that come with that choice.
I think that this would just p**s people off until they just found a way to disable it.
Same as electric windows which only work when the ignition is turned on.
I get in the car, the first thing I want to do is open the window, the last thing is turning on the ignition.
Same at the end of the journey. I stop, I turn off the ignition. A few seconds later I get out and want to close the windows, but they don't move.
I think this is a good idea overall, however I do agree that it is stupid to just stop the car totally or force driver to put seat belt on when they are just pulling out of their garage or sometime.
Maybe instead of not able to run the car, they should make the car not go over a set speed limit (maybe 10-15mph) so the car still be able to move in short distance situation and limited to actually drive on the road. And the law should add a very stiff fine for anyone who disable it, maybe a impound plus fine or something.
P.S. I do agree those power window thing is annoying!
