Personally, I believe workout centers are vainglorious wastes of human effort. A lot of action happens, but the results take months to be fully realized.

In the meantime, the actual energy expended through exercise machines could be harnessed and returned to the electric grid. It might be possible for workout centers to be self-sufficient or better with regards to energy consumption. The exercise machines provided would need some form of electrical generation as its primary form of mechanical resistance.

Yeah, it took me a while to find ideas even further back than that. I still stand by it. My conception is more along the lines of generators replacing or being powered by weight racks. Now if there was a way to harness the power of a pilates practitioner... ;p
