Shuttle foam | |||||||||||||||||
There is not much information on the shuttle foam problem and the obvious solution to the problem of the stuff falling off would be to re-enforce the foam with fibers in the manner of fiberglass or use a metal or cloth netting incorporated within the foam to increase its strength. This is so obvious that it seems very likely the people at NASA have considered it but I have heard nothing on this possibility.

Good idea, but I agree that this seems obvious. A fabric was proposed (wasn't it actually prototyped?) --a problem was the global failure of the solution --something like bubbling with heat propogating quickly underneath. Hopefully, this is a high priority item for the new generation vehicles.
