There has been some concern about hot drinks that are too hot and the only way to test it is to chance being burned by a sip. It should be possible to make a cup with a circular thermometer buried around the transparent rim and the bulb of the thermometer inside the lower part of the cup. Zones could be marked on the rim so that the thermometer indicator could clearly show if the temperature of the contained liquid fell into a temperature tolerable level.Conversely, a small thermometer of more conventional shape could run up the outside of the cup to indicate the temperature although either thermometer should be within the surface of the cup for safety and ease of cleaning.

There are temperature sensitive inks that change color with temperature changes. See http://www.screenweb.com/index.php/channel/6/id/1425/A paper cup with a label on the exterior printed with such an ink could indicate if it was safe to drink the liquid in the cup.

These could be useful--I'd be surprized if they aren't already being produced. Unfortunately, most of my "tongue burn" problems are associated with drinks in disposable cups, which I wouldn't expect to have this feature.

I like hte idea of color-changing ink...like a fish-tank thermometer or the disposable thermometers they sometimes use at hospitals.
