A huge proportion of political wrangling seems to be about allocating money. Why doesn't someone, a candidate or public interest group, show us in broad terms how the federal budget is divvied up? My impression is that the proportion of the budget available for discretionary spending by a president or congress is miniscule, after debt service, entitlements, defense etc.
A summary pie chart would be a good start. The printed budget is hundreds of pages long, but could be represented in a way most Americans could understand. We would see what we are really paying for and fighting over.
