Add lights that extend from top of the exercise equipment that would light up if no one were using the equipment. This light would mean the equipment is available and since it would be extended on top of the equipment one could see it from the other end of the gym.

For larger gyms, you could color-code the lights to correspond with different types of equipment.

Barring lights, you could walk (an exercise unto itself) over to the exercise equipment and see if it were in use.

sheesh....next you will want a number queue system to page you on a vibrating pager when a piece of equipment is available for you! Or to have a light go on if the equipment you are the most out of shape person within 50 feet and need it the most?

Let's see....a blinking red and green light means the stair stepper is available, and it has spotted someone who is very overweight....oh, wait! there goes my pager!
