Baby Car Seat (Rotatable) | |||||||||||||||||
When attempting to put a baby in a car seat, the car seat is usually in the middle seat in the back of the car facing forward and it can be tiresome trying to secure the baby in the seat as you enter the car from the side doors. Imagine being able to rotate the baby car seat 90 degrees (left or right) with ONE HAND, prior to placing the baby in the seat. You will now be able to secure your baby in the seat while the seat is directly facing you.

I think this is a cool idea which can be easily inplemented without compromising the safety of the seat.
I don't even have kids, but one expercience with a child seat was enough to make me believe there had to be a better way...and here it is!
Obviously this will make it easier to strap in the kid, but what can be done about attaching the seat to the car?
Aren't there fully detachable seats that you can strap the kid in while outside of the car?
We had visitors this weekend who came with a baby and a car seat. It was easy to put the car seat in an "outside" seat (i.e., not in the middle). We have an old car and no experience with car seats, and it seemed relatively easy to get the 16 month in and out of the car.
What about the safety aspect of it? Do you need a locking mechanism, once you position the seat?
I think there are some legal issues with age / size of child that may have to be considers. I would also propose a "quick release" car seat base that allows the seat to be installed an removed in a few seconds to allow adults to use the car without the long process of un-install and re-install of the seat.
This is a good idea and has precedent. There are a variety of motorized seats for the elderly and handicapped which rotate facing out a car/van door and then carry the individual back inside the vehicle. I don't think you need a motorized solution for a child, but the rotating/sliding mechanism should be easy enough to design/build.
I know this is an excellent idea because I've seen it in practice! We just came back from visiting my sister-in-law in Japan, and their Combi convertible seat is just as you described. The seat base locks in the car with the LATCH system, and the seat itself locks on a rotating platform on the base. It rotates left and right 90 degrees. The connection is solid and seems very safe. The convenience cannot be adequately described. When placing their (very large) child in the seat, it is SO much easier when facing the child rather than on the side. It's true that you can get a baby seat that snaps in and out of the car, so you can seat the child from outside the car. But that is only good up to a certain size. For the larger booster seats and larger children, this is a godsend.
This product already exists in Europe.
Very simple, they attached a normal car seat to a base with a locking mechanism.
