Roller Furling Flag Pole | |||||||||||||||||
This idea come from the sailing world. In sailing you can purchase a jib (front sail on a boat) that automatically rolls up (mechanical or motor powered). The idea here it to apply this to a flag that is on a flag pole. The flag would roll up inside the pole with the touch of a button and unroll when needed. This would work very well on flag poles on the tops or sides of building where access is limted. It could also be triggered by light to only roll out the flag during the day time.

I like the idea but I see some technical difficulties. The rolling jib, through the forward stay, relies on the mast for support. The flag pole is heavy because it does not have any support and I am not sure if the construction will be mechanically sound. On the other hand there are rotating masts so it may actually be possible.
Think of this as more of a sort of roller-furling main instead of jib. The flag would roll into the pole to be protected from the elements.
