The concept is very simple. I think that since there is XM commercial free music there should be commercial free TV. I think that a TV company should offer that as an option. You might have to pay a little more but I think it would be worth it. I hate watching a show and right when you get into it theres a 3 minute commercial break. Another idea would be to put all the commercials at the end of the program. So say your watching an hour show they should have the actual 40 minutes shown then at the end they show the 20 minutes of commercials. What do you think?

I think that you and a good many other people would switch channels when the commercials come on at the end.

sand, Aug 27 2006

Sand thats the whole point, people dont want to watch commercials

briansalvesen, Aug 27 2006

No, the whole point is that you can't sell sponsors time for commercials that won't be watched. The reason commercials are placed at critical points in a TV program is that people keep watching.

sand, Aug 27 2006

I don't get it. Last I checked I think this is called HBO? This TV station says "Pay More" and you get no commercials. Am I missing something?

bkeene12, Aug 27 2006

Many countries already have, and have always had, commercial free TV channels. Look up Television Licence and BBC.

Sand, you live in Finland, I'm surprised you didn't point this out.

Many other countries ban advertisments during programmes, or limit have a maximum limit to the number of minutes per hour. This has broken down somewhat in recent years, as satellite broadcasters just base themselves for legal purposes in countries with the laxest laws (Sky in Luxembourg, CNN in the USA).

What does my residence have to do with my comments on this matter?

sand, Aug 28 2006

Yes i am aware of commercial free channels but i was thinking a company could offer all their channels comercial free

briansalvesen, Aug 28 2006

They could, but they'd have to provide content people would be willing to pay more for, and at that have to produce a calibre of programming similar to the likes of HBO, or somehow have another revenue stream besides subscriptions (DVD sales maybe).

On the other end of the spectum, in the land without a TV license and a mostly pay paradigm, I'd like to see a suite of free advertising supported channels that are widely avalable and carry content competitive with extended basic cable.

This should be moved out of the Upgrade Features category. Maybe, to avoid similar mistakes by posters in the future, the title of the categroy should be expanded by appending "for this site".

ok how about an option to not show certain commercials? I really hate all those stupid tampon commercials, and I'm a guy living alone and it really doesnt relate to me.. I should have the right to watch only the ones I want to see. or to just skip past them.

dragonman, Dec 20 2009

The first idea is good, but I don't really want to watch 20 mins. of commercials at the end. Unless they're funny.
