A food and drink cooler mounted in the console, front or back, could use a cool air diversion from the air conditioning to chill items taken for long drives or picnics. Most of the time this would be used would be in warm weather when the AC is on anyway and the cooler would have negligible effect on the amount of cool air used to chill the vehicle. Perhaps it could also have a heat option to keep food warm on the way home from the take out shop during the winter.
The cooler itself should be removable and portable for carrying to the picnic site or to open up space when needed.

I like this idea as it would keep beverages very cool. I just want to point out that there is a wholesaler on the web that has not one but two coolers that can be plugged into the power source in your car (cigarette lighter). This unit is a console type unit and can keep food warm if the need arises.
Good idea, so good that it's already been done. I've seen it in a '95 Mercedes E-class, it came with the factory-installed AC.Regards, F.
i have one in my honda CRV, but i never use it... its a cigarette lighter compatible small icechest fridge for exactly as you say. I'd much rather have a better seating system for my dogs, or an automatic system that opened the skywindow when the temperature was too hot inside and a dog/child inside, or a system that rings my mobile telephone if the car alarm is triggered... so many car ideas... and keeping food cold is low priority next to my real transport needs. Keeping the mud flaps from ripping off when hitting rocks in 4wd mode would be nice. A mobile telephone-connected car-computer diagnostic system that a remote caller from honda-service with my permission could call up my car and find out if it needs anything.... but i've had the food cooler for years now and have only used it once... its bulky and really easier to just buy a cold drink at the next stop.
