Why not have buttons on vending machines where instead of accepting your change you can press this button and donate your change to charity.

The charity could be highlighted on the machine with maybe even a flyer that you grab that had more info about the charity. So for example Coke or Pepsi could partner with City of Hope to offer such vending machines to the public.

Most vending machines are owned and operated by private individuals. I doubt there is a cost-effective means of insuring they don't pocket a portion of the charitable contributions.

United Way was caught paying their staff a very large portion of the charitable contributions, only a very small fraction reached the intended recipients. In my opinion, find local charities in your area to contribute to. At least you have some local interaction with them.

JSH is right. To be effective the vending machines would have to be owned and operated by the charities in whole to be effective. Your concept can fly if the charities run it.
