PROBLEM: floss needs to be smooth to intitially slide between teeth, but then the smoothness makes it less effective in cleaning around the gums.

SOLUTION: floss that has alternating sections of smooth and rough. A half-inch section could be smooth, next to an inch-long rough piece that would clean around the gums. Use the next pairing for the next tooth gap.

P.S.: the rough section could simply be frayed. BTW, this idea happens to be similar to bkeene12's idea of floss with knots.

Very good idea! I bought the stuff that was "rough" only but it fell apart before I finished six teeth.

Good idea. I tried doubling the dental floss, as was cited in another idea elsewhere, and it worked better than the single strand of floss too.
