Disable Cell Phones | |||||||||||||||||
I travel a lot by automobile and the number of "near misses" by people using their cell phones is on the increase. I am guilty also. When a vehicle is in gear and in motion the cell phone should disable(airplane mode). This should also extend to movie theaters,classrooms,etc. Laws and volunteer efforts are not working.

Research has indicated that use of a cell phone, even with a speaker unit, does severe damage to driving capability. Nevertheless, there are some crucial emergencies that require cell phone use while a car is in motion. Also, passengers would also be deprived of the use of the phones. It is not an easy problem.
Yea cuz then when you needed directions you would have to pull over. probably speaks for itself according to what sand wrote.
nice idea conceptually ..but to automatically know that the cell phone is in car ..not near it..and the sys should not disable phone of other passengers in the car ..
my suggestion :bluetooth - many phones already have them ..and bluetooth chips are fairly inexpensive ..
wat say guys ??
Sure, then go ahead and make it so mascara won't open, shavers won't turn on, lighters won't light, and burger boxes that won't open either. You're talking about distracted driving. It doesn't matter what the cause is, laws are already on the books. If you can't stay in your lane, don't drive the speed limit, or otherwise cause (near) accidents - cops should issue tickets for the result - not the cause.
Many people can drive and talk on the phone without a problem. But you don't notice them. It's the 25% or so that probably should have their mouth taped shut and blinders on, that can't - that everyone sees and make general comments like this.
