Trip meter with cost | |||||||||||||||||
With the high prices of fuel, don't you feel it would be useful to have the trip meter on the car also calculate the cost of fuel used for the km run? That way, one can easily understand how sometimes travel can be so wasteful, particularly in cities.

Most cars I've driven recently with computerised displays have an option to display MPG (or Litres/100 Km). It is frightening to watch what happens when you accelerate to hard.
I rented a van with an MPG meter in the computer. It happily informed me that I was getting something like 25 mpg average. When I filled it and did the math, it got 19mpg. Are they all lying?
I suggest adding a total cost of ownership counter, in which the money invested in buying the car, taxes, insurance, etc. would be integrated. It would have a tremendous impact on the actual cost perception. I would want one on my bicycle, too. That one would be a 'total benefit of ownership' counter. Ideas like this can help us decide which transport mode is best for each occasion.
