These days most computers laptops servers blade systemsAll use their own power system.

Besides all the temperature waste problems it's quite noisy too.Why not make a new network cable standard lets say UTPX and provide trough the same network cable also power. It will not provide power to wireless devices but they can use the same utpx outleds to charge their bateries.

There are other bennefists as wel, a company could then buy a more larger more efficient electric AC/DC converter, most likely with some add on to connect an ups or backup grid. The heat of this device could be then disposed to the normal office heating devices. Altough it also needs active cooling (for those hot summer days) but then this cooling would be at the right place close to the head source instead of beeing spread arround a whole IT floor.

OK CPU's produce heat to and even some disk, but then for those server simply have an air in and air out jacket (or helium) to cool them.

For home usage it would also be handy as currently i have to much AC/DC converters a simple plain system standard would be nice...Background...Having seen large IT plants filled with servers and blade servers i never understood why the heating problem have not been tackled a bit smarter trough a kind of new industry standard for power suply to computers. Besides that i realy hate noise sounds like the ones from power suplies.

A: The computer components , namely the CPU(s) and Hard drives make quite a bit of heat too.

B: It is cheaper, copperwise, to include the PSU in the computer, ather than externally. The only reason to relocate the PSU would be to make the computer smaller.

C: As for PSUs, current designs are pretty efficient.

In reaction to above comment. In my work i see large scale computer parcs storing hundreds of servers.Heat from local inside AC/DC converters realy is a problem.

It would instead be cheaper to have not all these small devices inside but have on large version outside, it's cooling system could be combined with the buildings warming system.

And free me in home, well i would gladly have one converter and get rid of all the various kinds of AC/DC converters in my home i have to many different versions of them.

So UTPX i hope someday..
