Add-on speakers for surround | |||||||||||||||||
So you've had a basic stereo speaker setup that you're satisfied with. Now you want to switch to a surround setup, but those old speakers still do a good job. (More) speaker companies should offer a way to purchase auxilliary speakers (the same as or complementary to your existing speakers) to do the job, rather than having to purchase a whole 5.1+ set. I've found that purchasing a pair of speakers from a different brand does a poor job, since the output characteristics can vary broadly.

Is it just a matter of providing a few more speakers or must the sound be separated intelligently by complex equipment so that the appropriate sound is emitted by each properly placed speaker?
You can buy auxiliary speakers fine. You do in fact need to replace your amplifer/receiver for one that can do ssurround sound, if it doesn't yet.
I imagine prosumer models would offer these, easy, but I'm thinking about the kind you'd buy for your computer, or perhaps a shelf stereo system.
The computer or shelf stereo system would need to be surround capable before you go get additional speakers.
Most recent computers sound systems are surround capable, needing just amplified speakers to achieve surround.
Most stereo systems are not capable of processing surround at all,so need to be replaced to achieve real surrounnd sound. Surrund sound is not simply adding speakers to a home theatre or stereo amplifier system.
