Prevent double cranking | |||||||||||||||||
Modern engines are so silent, sometimes you tend to crank the engine with the engine on, believing that the engine is off. This could cause major damage to the starter motor on the long run. Why can't cars disallow such a thing happening, and instead of the grinding sound of double cranking, the sweet sound of a female telling you, "I'm already turned on!", or the like.

All that sexual excitement from an engine already turned on is rather expensive with the additional audio equipment. Isn't there an indicator light on the dash that shows the engine is operating?
That's a excellent idea. I think it should be fairly easy to design a mechanism that disables the starter once the engine is running. Attaboy!
It would be as simple as turning the key to start or pressing a start button running a routine in the engine computer to statr the engine, including taking control of the starter motor.
It's called the tachometer, guys. Tells you how fast the engine is operating at any given time. Unfortunately, the united states has a lot of piss poor drivers, and piss poor drivers really love automatic transmissions and as few gauges as possible on the dashboard. Thus, many cars don't have tachometers.
The solution? Drive a manual, clearly.
The solution is exactly what the poster suggested; a mechanism that disables the starter once the engine is started. It makes perfect sense.
Seems like a good idea but I really don't want a device that will ultimately fail and prevent me from starting my car. The fact that computers, batteries, and starters fail already is enough aggrevation. (I had a car once that wouldn't start after a softball bounced off the hood because the car was equipped with a device that cuts off the battery if the car has been in a crash. Quite the learning experience, but it still cost me for a service call to get it running.)
I can also imagine a start key or button, which, once on, does the complete procedure of cranking until the engine starts, and then cuts off the starter. Even here, it will prevent over-cranking, and the eliminate additional skills of starting a car, something we have learned to take for granted!
