Intelligent side mirrors | |||||||||||||||||
Over-taking on a two-way road could be risky in high-speed traffic, because one has to gently edge out to see what is coming in the opposite direction. Sometimes, near collision situations occur, especially in tricky situations, and the opposite car coming at very high speed. There is more than a foot of distance beteen the driver's line of vision and the edge of the side mirror. How about a small camera on the edge of the mirror, which scans the road ahead, and also possibly a radar-like device which warns you about oncoming car coming in collision course. A compact screen could be placed on the drivers side corner of the dashboard, near the windscreen.

You could go all-out and replace the mirrors with cameras and tiny video screens. Maybe one could be mounted on a small antenna on the top of the car pointing backwards, so the driver can have a complete view of what's approaching from either side.
I remember seeing some high end vehicles that do have a camera and video screen in place of the rear view mirror. I haven't seen one that looks forward though, this sounds like it might be a good idea.
