GPS ETA Alarm | |||||||||||||||||
How many of us have been caught waiting for someone somewhere, wondering when they were going to arrive? Co-Worker late for a meeting, frineds running late for a dinner reservation, or a spouse running late for dinner? Today's cell phones have the ability to allow tracking of their location. Their are tracking services available today that you can opt into (For privacy reasons). Combine that capability with traditional gps mapping software like mapquest that allows you to calculate the distance and time between two points and you could have an "Estimated Time To Arrival" notification. You could access this from a Web-enabled phone or a computer and it would tell an estimated time until they arrive.

Estimating ETA is mighty hit or miss. I can see where you could project the persons position on a map, but ETA is questionable. The estimation depends on the route chosen, the mode of transportation and other factors that the system doesn't know. Mode of transport is particularly important. The system doesn't know if you're driving, taking a cab, taking a bus, taking a subway, or even walking.
True, That's why it's an estimate. Most gps mapping software assumes your driving and calculates based off of posted speed limits along the route. Not perfect, but it could track your progress at intervals and adjust the time based upon your progress.
