Just Add Eggs | |||||||||||||||||
Just Add Eggs (a.k.a. Omelets Made Simple) There’s already Hamburger Helper for ground beef and similar derivatives for other meats. Why not have a few ready packaged mixes of fresh vegetables, cheese, and pre-cooked meats that could just be added to scrambled eggs to create a wonderful omelet without the work of chopping six different vegetables and trying to store any leftovers for use at a later date. Now you can just reseal the Ziploc pouch that the pre-made mix came in and you’re done. Imagine: peppers, mushrooms, ham, and cheddar added to your eggs with only about 10 seconds of extra work compared to scrambled eggs.

Egg Helper. I like it. I would definitely try it if I saw it on the shelf. I'm no chef.
It's a nice idea in theory but when I cook I like to be sure about the quality of my ingredients. I have always found industrially prepared mixes, pre-frozen set-ups, etc inferior to the fresh vegetables and other ingredients I pick out myself. Preparation time is a matter of a couple of minutes anyway.
True, but as a product this could sell. Good cooks who take pride in their cooking or are concerned about quality would not buy it, but plenty of others might. After all millions of people buy Hamburger Helper.
Such a product could be vacuum sealed and irradiated. That would keep it fresh for a long time without refrigeration or a lot of salt. If the product was cooked to preserve it the ingredients would likely be overcooked. (Like a lot of canned foods are now.) Could be a good thing for camping.
The tough part here is getting people to accept irradiated foods. . . And that ain't easy considering the technology to do this has been around for a long time and it hasn't caught on.
That people could be persuaded to purchase inferior goods is no surprise but that is not why I like to set out ideas here.
I was thinking a refrigerated product with a shelf life of a couple of weeks. The meats and cheeses will already last (Oscar Meyer’s Lunchables last around 60 days) and the vegetables, depending on which ones are used, could last up to 14 days (ala pre-packaged salads).
Perhaps my perspective is a bit different skewed from being at school, where every minute of the day counts and the difference between a ready packed omelet and chopping the ingredients myself will likely mean being late for Barry’s class.
I might be wrong, but egg beaters has taken this a step further, selling western omelettes mixes and the like in a carton- no need to even add eggs- but all the veggies are in there- never tried it so can't attest to the quality. Your idea would allow for people to have the eggs the way they want them- all egg whites, mixed, etc.
