No-hassle rental cars | |||||||||||||||||
In Washington, DC (and other metropolitan areas) there is a business called ZipCar. People pay a membership fee and are then able to pay for access to cars parked outside of the subway stops. It is convenient for folks who don't have a car, but might want to make a day trip to the country or to a distant shopping center. People sign up for a car online before they need it and then receive information about what car they should look for when they get above ground and where it is parked. Because the cars have keyless entry, the entire process of renting the car doesn't involve another person or lines or signing documents. You park the car back where you got it by the time you said you will return it. My idea is to apply the ZipCar concept to airport rental car companies. It is always annoying to have to go to the rental car counter and wait in line and sign things to get your keys. If an airport could establish a parking lot on some sort of easy grid system (so the cars would be easy to locate...your car is in row B, column 20 or something like that), then you could just take the regular airport ground transportation to the ZipCar lot, find your car, and get on the road. All paperwork and payments would be handled through an individuals online account.

National car rental has something like with Emerald Aisle. You go straight to the row of cars, pick out which one you want, and then drive it off. The security person at the exit gate just checks your license.
